![]() ![]() Perhaps the movie is saying that we aren't smart or wise enough to be playing God's role? Despite being so intelligent as to create Ava, he could not contain her. However in Ex-Machina, Nathan is smart but he is not perfect. In the Christian Religion, God is supposed to be omnipotent and omniscient. Perhaps the movie is stating something about feminine identity? That men and women are not the same and should not be treated as such? Ava, although constructed herself in the skin of other prototypes to appear human, she is not human. But Adam cut his own skin and revealed that he is flesh and bone. In the bible, Eve is said to be a direct creation from Adam. But Ava does something that Eve didn't - she tricked Caleb and left him trapped in the garden for her to explore knowledge and life on her own. In the story of Adam and Eve, Eve is responsible for tempting Adam to eat the fruit of knowledge and spawn the creation of original sin. It's also worth noting that there are 7 sessions with Ava, 7 being a common biblical number and the number of days it took for God to create the world.īut I view this movie to be a less an interpretation but more of a perversion of the Garden of Eden story. Towards the end of the movie, Caleb figures out that Nathan made Ava to be extremely attractive in the eyes of Caleb, much as God created Eve to be appeasing to Adam. He attempts to convince her that she is capable of sex and sexuality. Nathan assesses Caleb's attraction towards Ava. This is very similar to Adam and Eve possessing knowledge of life and being alive, but without free will, can never truly know what it means to be alive. Caleb makes the analogy of Mary and the Black and White room, saying that someone can know everything about color but will never truly know what it is like to feel color. One of the key components of the Adam and Eve story is the birth of original sin and free will. ![]() Perhaps these were the multiple prototypes constructed by Nathan before Ava (including Kyoto). Genesis 2:20 describes that there of all the animals that God created, there was no suitable helper for Adam. Caleb thinks he is testing to see if she is real, but Nathan knows that she is programmed to escape by any means, so the real test is if Ava is suitable for Caleb, much as Eve was desirable to Adam. Over the course of the film, Caleb and Ava are seen interacting and watched by Nathan, much like God probably watched Adam and Eve interacting in the garden. The creator, Nathan, has built his utopia here and brought a man (the Adam) here to observe his newest creation, Ava (notice the similarity in name towards Eve). The movie is set in a luscious, green utopia, very much so like the garden of eden. I'm still forming my ideas and refining them, but I am welcome to a critique and any follow up comments! I read a lot of the previous discussions on this subreddit regarding this movie but I feel as if nobody touched on the idea of the parallels this movie draws between God, Adam, and Eve and our attempts to play God's role. I just watched Ex-Machina for the first time and I enjoyed it. ![]()
